Changes to the 12th Darlington Scout Group

14th February 2017

Dear Parents

Changes to the 12th Darlington Scout Group

The Group Committee met on 1st February to discuss the following three issues:

a.         New timings for the Cub and Scout sections, post Easter 17.

b.         The future of the Scout Section from Sep 17.

c.         How parents can bring or develop new skills to enhance the Scouting experience for everyone.

I am pleased to inform you that following your feedback and changes to the Leadership Team, group session times will be as follows: –

Section

Current day & time

New day & time

Beavers Monday – 5:45pm till 7:00pm Monday – 5:45pm till 7:00pm – No change
Cubs Friday – 6:45pm till 8:00pm Monday – 7:15pm till 8:30pm from 8/5/17
Scouts Friday – 8:15pm till 10:00pm Friday – 7:00 pm till 8:45 pm from 5/5/17

This year we welcomed John Morrison as the new Akela in the Cub Pack. We hope this move will encourage more volunteers to come forward to become uniformed leaders to help him and the Group to take the Pack forward into 2017, and beyond.

Those of you who attended the AGM in September 16 may recall the notice given by the current leadership team in the Scout section to stand down from their current roles in Sep 17. The effect is:

For the troop to continue; from Sep 17, we need adult(s) to become uniformed leaders.

Current Scout Policy requires a minimum of one uniformed leader and one other adult for a section to meet.

As collateral, the closure of the Troop will impact on the progression of beavers and cubs.

As parents of Scouts you will be aware the opportunities Scouting gives not only to its youth members but also the enjoyment it can give to those adults who volunteer their time; through the learning of new skills and seeing the difference you can make to the development of a young person.

a.         Skills for life!

b.         Fun for everyone.

We ask that everyone to please give volunteering with the Troop as a uniformed leader serious consideration.

It is not as daunting as you may think.

We have looked at several different leadership models. If you believe you can fulfil a uniformed leader role to contribute to running of the Troop then we would like to hear from you. If you are interested in finding out more about the role(s) and/or Scouting contact any of the leaders for further details.

We are also looking for parental/ adult support to help the current and future section leadership teams to give a better experience to your children. We would be interested in the skills/ interests you could offer or be willing to learn new skills to support the Group. Can you complete the questionnaire below or hand in the form that will be handed out at the next section meeting and it hand back to your child’s section leader by 17th March 2017 please?

These changes offer a positive opportunity for the Group to continue to offer an exciting programme of activities to the youth and adult members of the leadership teams – physically, intellectually, socially and spiritually.

If you are interested in volunteering or wish to discuss this letter further, please contact a member of the Leadership Team either in person or via the email address below.

There will be a parents’ consultation and information evening on Friday 8th May 2017 where you can find out more on the opportunities available within the group as a leader and to find out more on Scouting and what the movement does to develop young people.

Thank you for your continued support.

Keith Willson

Chairman

 12th Darlington Scout Group

An interesting story about four people: Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody.

There was an important job to be done and Everybody was asked to do it.

Everybody was sure Somebody would do it.

Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it.

Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody’s job.

Everybody thought Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn’t do it.

It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when actually Nobody asked Anyone
